Applying the 0% Chance Mindset
A practical case from a reader
The 0% Chance Mindset is more than a radical concept - it can be a practical compass for navigating our way out of the Cult of Achievement.
We all carry our list of "0% Chance" tasks - ambitions we’ve shelved because we convinced ourselves that the odds of success are near zero. For me, one of those is learning a musical instrument. I’ve always wanted to play well enough to perform for and with friends, yet my own perception of my potential is near zero.
Usually that would be the end of the story. But using the Fail on Purpose methodology, I realised the "downside" is negligible - just a bit of time and the cost of the lessons and instrument. The upside, however, can be joyously transformative:
-
Inoculation: If I fail, it becomes a pre-emptive rewiring mechanism. Because I expect to fail, the pressure evaporates. The attempt becomes playful, the effort feels light, and the mind stays calm. I can actually have fun in the process of failing.
-
Momentum: If I somehow succeed, I haven’t just opened a portal to a new world of joy; I have shattered my own conditioned beliefs. That success empowers me to step off the tracks and embrace even larger "0% chance" challenges in the future.
The journey to living on purpose begins the moment we choose to embrace failure.
Reflections
by Low Wai Peng
Chapter 1: Performance
Reflection: luggage that we carry with us daily, need to let go of things along the way, else it becomes too heavy to carry on. Not to be attached to things or emotions, while being responsible and accountable, letting go does not mean forgetting or ignoring. Journey of experiencing every moment, with both pain sadness joy happiness, uncover the true meaning of life. It’s never about not failing. Ability to cope with setbacks and challenges, failing on purpose to move forward, is part of what life brings.
We all carry our “luggage” each day.
But to move forward, we must let go,
for weight “unlifted” becomes too heavy to bear.
Letting go is not forgetting,
nor ignoring what matters.
It is freedom from attachment,
while still holding responsibility and care.
Life is a journey of moments with
pain and sadness, joy and laughter,
woven together to reveal its true meaning.
It is never about avoiding failure.
It is about rising through setbacks,
embracing challenges,
and even failing on purpose,
because each fall is a step forward,
each stumble a seed of growth.
Chapter 2: Tell us a story.
Reflection : reflect, learn, improve, feel and sense the pain in order to improve, version of experiencing failure by failing on purpose. Observe how children play, with no fear of falling, as it’s part of fun and joy of play, where pain and tears, laughter and joy commingle
Reflect. Learn. Improve
Growth often comes through pain, through the deliberate act of “failing forward”. To truly improve, we must embrace failure not as defeat, but as practice.
Watch how children play: they tumble without fear, laugh through the tears, and rise again with joy. For them, falling is not failure. It is part of the game. Pain and laughter, tears and triumph, all woven together into the pure joy of learning.
Chapter 3: Inside the Achievement trap
Reflection : never good enough, achievement cult, does it then mean we don’t set goals, setting goals gives us a sense of direction and purpose, not anchored on a single version of achievements, the journey is continuous where learning and reflections enrich experience and contribution to larger community with maximum positive impact, where no one is fearful of failing…
Is ok to lose and let others win, sometimes this may contribute to greater good, concept of 舍得
We live in an age of achievement,
a cult of endless milestones.
But does this mean we abandon goals?
No. Goals give us direction,
a compass for purpose.
Yet true growth is not anchored
to a single trophy or triumph.
The journey itself is continuous,
woven with learning, reflection,
and contributions that ripple outward
to enrich the larger community.
In this space, failure is no enemy.
No one fears the fall,
for each stumble is a step,
each loss a lesson,
each pause a chance to rise again.
It is okay to lose,
to let others win.
Sometimes “surrender”
is the seed of greater good.
This is the wisdom of 舍得 :
to give, to let go,
and in letting go,
to gain something far more profound.
Chapter 4: Freedom through failure
Reflection : remove fear of failure as it is a crucial ingredient for continuous learning and agility to face a very uncertain world.
Remove the fear of failure.
It is not a shadow to flee,
but the force that shapes resilience.
In its embrace, we learn,
we bend, we rise and become
agile against the storm
of an uncertain world.
Failure is not the end,
but the rhythm of becoming,
the pulse of growth,
the secret ingredient
that turns doubt into strength.
Chapter 5: 0% chance mindset
Reflection: free to act, bold decision can be made, creativity flourishes as there is no constraints nor fear of failure as falling on purpose is the bedrock. An unconstrained mind and hearts lead to better decisions, actions that can be richer and stronger in impact for larger whole.
Freedom to act sparks bold decisions. Creativity thrives when fear of failure dissolves, when falling on purpose becomes the foundation of growth. An unconstrained mind, with an open heart, shape choices that are richer, stronger, and more powerful in their impact on the greater whole.
