Applying the 0% Chance Mindset

A practical case from a reader

The 0% Chance Mindset is more than a radical concept - it can be a practical compass for navigating our way out of the Cult of Achievement.

We all carry our list of "0% Chance" tasks - ambitions we’ve shelved because we convinced ourselves that the odds of success are near zero. For me, one of those is learning a musical instrument. I’ve always wanted to play well enough to perform for and with friends, yet my own perception of my potential is near zero.

Usually that would be the end of the story.  But using the Fail on Purpose methodology, I realised the "downside" is negligible - just a bit of time and the cost of the lessons and instrument. The upside, however, can be joyously transformative:

  • Inoculation: If I fail, it becomes a pre-emptive rewiring mechanism. Because I expect to fail, the pressure evaporates. The attempt becomes playful, the effort feels light, and the mind stays calm. I can actually have fun in the process of failing.

  • Momentum: If I somehow succeed, I haven’t just opened a portal to a new world of joy; I have shattered my own conditioned beliefs. That success empowers me to step off the tracks and embrace even larger "0% chance" challenges in the future.

The journey to living on purpose begins the moment we choose to embrace failure.

Making the Impossible, Exceptional

In the world of probability, two six-sided dice can only ever sum to twelve. To roll a thirteen is, by all laws of logic and nature, impossible.

The story of Singapore is exactly that: the story of a "13" that kept turning up against all odds.

Since our independence in 1965, Singapore has lived in the realm of the improbable. We were a tiny island with no natural resources, no hinterland and a sudden, daunting mandate to survive. By any conventional calculation, the dice were loaded against us. But where others saw a mathematical dead end, our pioneers saw an opportunity for ingenuity, sheer grit and a relentless fight for survival.

The Singapore Identity is making the Impossible, Exceptional!

Success for Singapore has never been about playing it safe or sticking to the predefined rules of the game. It has been about the indomitable spirit to challenge seemingly impossible tasks.

Our journey has been a constant evolution. Under Impossible circumstances, we made it Improbable, proving we could survive when the world thought we couldn't. We took the Improbable and made it Possible, by building a thriving metropolis and a global hub from a swamp.  And did all we could and move from being Possible to Exceptional. A trusted, reputable and progressive nation we are today.

As we evolve into a sophisticated global player, there is a risk of becoming comfortable. It serves as a timely reminder that we must not forget the spirit that got us here. Our reputation as a "trusted" nation isn't just about stability, it is about the courage we showed when the path forward was invisible.

We must continue to take risks.

We must continue to challenge the status quo.

The moment we stop trying to "roll a 13" is the moment we lose the very essence of what it means to be Singaporean.

Uantchern’s insights remind us that our success is not a historical accident, but a result of a collective refusal to accept the limitations of the "dice" we were given.

I invite you to read these pages and rediscover the heart of our identity, the unwavering belief that through grit and imagination, the impossible is merely a starting point.
